Tagging solutions: what is the best method to fix tags?

Braden Lewis

Safety tagging systems can be used as a way to prevent accidents by identifying and marketing hazards until they are no longer a threat. But ensuring that your tags are secured robustly is equally as important as having the tags in the first place.

Ensuring your organisation is operating in a safe manner is of the utmost importance, especially in critical industries where hazards can potentially cause serious injuries, or even fatalities.

To make certain that your staff and machinery are working in a safe environment, safety tagging systems can be used as a way to prevent accidents by identifying and marking hazards until they are no longer a threat.

But ensuring that your tags are secured robustly is equally as important as having the tags in the first place.

Traditionally, plastic and stainless steel cable ties meet almost all applications where tags needed to be fixed. But, there are other options.

So, what is the best method to fix tags in your critical industry? We explore the topic further in this article.

Plastic Cable Ties

Plastic Cable Ties are made from Nylon 6/6 - a tough material, with good thermal and abrasion resistance.

Nylon 6/6 also resists fuels and most chemicals - ideal for those operating in critical industries, such as Oil and Gas, and Chemical Manufacturing. But that’s not all, cable ties can also be manufactured to produce UV stabilised ties for outdoor use.

Plastic Cable Ties are an easy operation option, with secure self-locking, anti-corrosive and durable insulation. However, Plastic Cable Ties are unsuitable for use on high heat applications like hot pipework.

Plastic Cable Ties are the best option for the majority of applications our tags are used in, including the Oil and Gas industry.

Stainless Steel Cable Ties

Stainless Steel Cable Ties provide high tensile strength, and can also stand extremely high temperatures, from –200°C to 538°C.

Due to their great strength and durability, these Cable Ties are most suitable for those working in harsh environments and extreme temperatures.

Our 316 grade Stainless Steel Cable Ties are self-locking and can be easily installed by hand. They are also available with PVC coating, for use in long-term solutions in harsh environments due to their resistance to water, salt and chemicals.

Unlike Plastic Cable Ties, Stainless Steel Cable Ties are resistant to heat, and can therefore be used when fixing to hot applications, such as heated pipework.

Stainless Steel Cable Ties are a great option for organisations working in harsh environments, as they are able to withstand the most extreme conditions. However, they can be one of the more expensive tagging solutions.

Twist Wire

At REGALTAG, our Twist Wire is available in stainless steel coated or as a plastic coated wire, which can be uncoated when needed.

Twist Wire is a very straightforward tagging solution to use, with no tools required to install, and it is readily available. It’s also useful in applications where tags are being reused and moved, as they can be easily undone.

However, due to its thin nature, Twist Wire can cut into Tagging Material over time, and unfortunately isn’t tamper evident. Twist wire also tends to have a much weaker breaking strength in comparison with other fixing methods such as cable ties.

Lead Seals & Stainless Steel Sealing Wire

Lead Seals & Stainless Steel Sealing Wire is a tamper-evident, secure tagging solution. Not to mention it can also be a cost-effective solution.

However, it can be a fiddly installation process, as there are two components involved, and a crimping tool must be used to fix the items.

Despite this, Lead Seals & Stainless Steel Sealing Wire provides your organisation with a reliable fixing and security solution, as it must be broken to be released.
